7 Day Otter Trail Break

Otters have made the Isle of Canna their home. Quick and secretive as they come ashore to their holts we have mapped out the best places for otter spotting. Visiting Canna you can learn how to spot the signs for otters with our NTS Ranger and see many other seabirds and wildlife including eagles, seals and dolphins. Our peaceful Isle of Canna is superb for walking and to discover the history and the archaeology of the most western of the Small Isles archipelago in the Scottish Hebrides.

Canna Campsite is committed to reducing its environmental impact. Run on renewable energy, we enable recycling, use eco-friendly cleaning products, encourage wildlife and support community projects.

Visit us for a peaceful experience of nature and wildlife!

Suggested Itinerary:

Day 1: Arrive at Canna to be met by Isebail, the Canna Campsite manager,  who will transport your luggage. Isebail was born and bred on Canna so can help you discover the best of our island! Walk to your accommodation and relax into your new home for the next few days!  On your walk you can book a meal at Cafe Canna and browse at the Canna Community Shop (both award-winning!)  In the evening walk around the bay to one of our otter sites below St Edwards. Continue on to follow the Puffin Trail and enjoy the sunset on your return walk.

Day 2: Start the day slowly with your Canna Kitchen homemade breakfast that we have prepared for you. Take a walk towards Tarbert, the Souterrains and the King of Norway’s grave with northern cliff views. This walk takes you to 3 of our key otter sites so keep your eyes and ears open for otters, eagles and other wildlife. In the evening watch the sunset or visit Cafe Canna for drinks and their local menu.

Day 3: Today take a gentle walk through the woodlands, visiting the Celtic Cross, then onto Coroghon Beach and the “Prison”. With a stop at Cafe Canna for lunch and a browse through Canna Community Shop and Canna House gardens this is a more relaxing day. Time to write a few postcards - drop in the postbox to ensure you get your Isle of Canna postmark!

Day 4: Today is time for a big walk! Take the Sanday circular route which leads you past the puffin stacks and seabird colonies. Watch out for the Bonxies who swoop down to try and drive you away from their nests. Sanday has several sites where otters can be seen including St Edwards and the lighthouse.

Both walks will give you beautiful views with the chance to see seals, porpoise, dolphins and basking sharks out to sea, eagles and seabirds skywards with sheep, cows, otters and rabbits inland!

Day 5: Relaxed wildlife walk: Take the road behind the Post Office to the woodland gate - walk up to Tighard. Through the small gate - turn right to walk along Tighard Park, cross the stream and head north to see Sea Eagles, Peregrine Falcons and the northern cliffs. Climb to the top of Compass Hill for views over to Sanday and Skye. Walk down via Coroghon to arrive at Canna Shop and Cafe Canna and round off your day with a glass of “The Jack” Canna’s very own craft beer!

Day 6: Community support: While visiting our island you can help our environment and community. Our Get Drastic With Plastic  project collects beach rubbish - its fascinating what arrives on our shores!

Or roll up your sleeves and volunteer with our community- there are always jobs to do. If you have a specific skill or expertise and would like to offer that to the community please let us know.

Day 7: Spend the morning packing up, checkout at 10am and leave your bags to be collected for the ferry. Take the opportunity to have a stroll past Tighard, follow Saturnino’s Path through the woodlands and descend to Canna Community Shop and Cafe Canna on your way to the ferry. Say goodbye to Canna for now and start planning your next visit!  We look forward to seeing you again soon!

Our peaceful Isle of Canna full of nature and wildlife looks forward to welcoming you!
